As I’ve said before 90% of my days are spent working away on the highway in Central Queensland. 12-14hr days are the norm.
On top of that I’m a very fussy bastard with my eating and one of my little quirks is that I don’t like eating cold food.
So I am time poor and want a hot breaky on the road… What to do?! After pondering this for a while I had the egg-cellent idea to cook raw eggs in my thermos. From the fridge to the thermos, just add boiling water from the kettle and off you go. But would it work?
I did some calculations for the temperature of my eggs from the fridge, the area they would displace in my 500ml thermos and the amount of boiling water that I could fit in and the idea seemed sound.
For my first attempt at 4:30am today I poured boiled water over two eggs and let them stand for 5 mins while I finished getting dressed for work. I then drained that water topped it up with more boiled water and headed out the door to work.
I planned on eating my breaky around 7am but as my site was running busy this morning I didn’t get to them til 9am. So did they work?….
Success!!! How could I contain my egg-citement?! Eggs cooked with no time spent ‘cooking’.
Tomorrow I am going to try again however I’m not going to refresh the water and see if I can get soft boiled. But for today I am egg-static!
Please egg-nore my terrible egg puns…. I guess the old adage is true. You are what you eat!
I also just wanted to mention a terrific new book about ‘real food’ Eat The Yolks by Liz Wolfe. Check it out at Cave Girl Eats
